Mmrikanda as the name suggest has connection with legendary Hrishi Markendeya. Hrishi Mrikanda is his father. He was the first one to start weaving for the Gods. And such was the finesse and the brightness of his creation that both Gods and men wanted to learn from him and thus started the tradition of handloom weaving.

Label Mmrikanda has been founded by two friends Myrah Naiding Barua and Maitrayee Baruah Agarwal. With their love for Sarees and Mekhela Chadars, they wanted the younger generation also to embrace these very versatile attires. Thus, was born Mmrikanda, a label that caters to both the older and younger masses along with the young modern brides, making sarees and mekhela chadar affordable and more accessible for each and everyone.

We at Mmrikanda aim to explore and evolve this very art of handloom keeping our tradition and culture intact. We have scoured the deep and remote villages of our region to find the finest weavers. Because of the remote location these weavers have been deprived of even basic amenities like education for the children, hygiene supplies for women, medical supplies etc. We try to get our weavers the right price without the involvement of the middleman who normally end up exploiting these weavers. And this in turn is helping to raise the standard of living for these remote weavers.

Also, in today’s ever changing fashionable world the art of handweaving is getting lost and the new generation is almost unaware of the richness, beauty and value of handwoven products. We are trying to make it available to the masses these very handloom/ handmade products in a modern way that will appeal to the new generation’s taste too.

And at the same time to adjust with the modern and ever-changing trends we try to create and make casual day to day wears that has been customized as per the clients’ taste and requirements. Then we also have light drapes like muslin, mul, linen, mercerized cottons etc. that can be draped by one and all. And our products are organically dyed mainly using vegetable dyes.
